Rep Ros-Lehtinen Speaks Out on the Sudan Election
Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) brought concern over next month’s Sudanese elections to the floor of the House of Representatives on Tuesday. As a ranking member on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, she drew attention to the promise of democratic transformation offered by Sudan's 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement, which hasn’t come to pass in the five years since the peace deal was signed. Referring to the upcoming elections as a “sham,” the congresswoman stressed the importance of bringing to justice Sudan’s president, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes in Darfur. She said:
“These elections are a sham - hijacked to legitimize the rule of a reprehensible, murderous regime. Responsible nations must work to ensure Sudan’s butcher answers for his crimes before this process moves forward.”
Tuesday marked Florida's day of action in an ongoing grassroots campaign, Sudan Sham Elections 2010. With events taking place across the United States, activists aim to generate attention to Sudan's elections in the weeks before polling begins and urge U.S. leaders at the highest levels to engage at this crucial moment in Sudan's history.

Excellent post. It is one of the best post from other. It is a useful and charming post. I want to sharing this topic with some of my close friends. So thanks this post.
I oppose the resolution condemning Palestinian efforts to achieve statehood. As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote in his famous "Letter from a Birmingham Jail", the biggest obstacle to the advance of freedom is the person who "paternalistic think you can set the timetable for another man [or woman ] freedom. " It is a pity that you have decided to push a resolution in Congress in match making time line on the liberation of Palestine.
Very nice info, completley relevant to my site, Ill link it right now.
thanks

At least someones standing up for them. Sudan is in so much chaos. It just seems like more politics has not done anything to solve their problems.

This is an election that really needs to have a lot of commentary. I think that it will truly be controversial until the ballots are cast.

Its good someone takes notice of these issues, however unless it offers us debt solutions it seems as though we are not interested in despots.
I really appreciate it that you shared with us.

Its about time that someone has spoken up about these elections. Its obvious that many of these elections are rigged and the same people stay in power.

These elections are vital to understand the complex situation in these areas. I work for a party bus rental in Los Angeles but I am a local in the Sudan. I miss my home but its better here.
I think if we keep up to date with these elections we can help fix many of the problems we have with our government.

The U.S. has the habit of trying to help the entire world when they really have many people that live in the U.S. in the same situation. We need to get our country right then we will be able to help other countries.

I think that the U.S has many of our own problems and I cant see how we have to deal with other countries problems when we cannot help ourselves. I feel bad for these countries but we need to help ourselves.

Wow. As usual, lots of guff about Sudan's elections from Enough!
Question: What does Congresswoman Ros-Lehitnen know about Sudan anyway??? But she's never been there. That's the real sham about this post - not the elections.
We Sudanese support the elections.
Four out of every five Sudanese registered to vote.
So, Enough!, just give it up - you're not in the driving seat. We are - us Sudanese right here in the mix.
We can make decisions - and grow our own institutions - without Enough and other advocacy groups (unhelpfully) putting its oar in. Western "analysis" like this about Sudan has clearly become something of an industry.
Here's a suggestion: find somewhere else to bleat about: DRC and Somalia - not to mention Gaza, which you remain conspicuously silent about; why???
