LRA Bill Continues To Roll Forward
H.R. 2478, “The Lord's Resistance Army Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act of 2009,” continues to pick up steam with 176 representatives signed on as co-sponsors.
Last month, the Senate passed their version of the LRA bill (S. 1067) with a remarkable 65 co-sponsors–an unprecedented level of support for a bill on sub-Saharan Africa. The House’s bill has rapidly gained support from representatives on both sides of the aisle and is set to possibly make history too.
Both LRA bills call on the United States to support a multi-pronged regional strategy to end the atrocities and massacres committed, and to stabilize and rebuild the communities long-affected, by the deadly LRA.
For more than 20 years, the Lord’s Resistance Army and its leader Joseph Kony have wreaked havoc on civilian communities across central Africa. What began in 1989 as a rebellion based in northern Uganda has morphed into a regional insurgency that now terrorizes civilians in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, southern Sudan, and the Central African Republic.
