Activists Speak Out On Sudan Elections

The voices of activists from across the country are growing louder amid increasing reports of fraud and vote manipulation coming out of Sudan in past weeks.  This morning, activists from STAND, the student-led division of Genocide Intervention Network, demonstrated in the front of the State Department in Washington, D.C., carrying trashcans reading "Sudan Ballot Box" and calling for more U.S. leadership on the issue.

This weekend also brought a global day of action led by the Sudan365 coalition.  Events held in 19 countries on Saturday called on all parties in Sudan to ensure a peaceful election process.  One participant, the San Francisco Bay Area Darfur Coalition, made this video, featuring a plea from Sudanese Lost Boys to the international community to closely monitor the elections.

Through these and other activist-led campaigns like SudanSham2010 and i On Sudan, which aim to ensure that the U.S. does not legitimize an election that is anything but free and fair, advocates are continuing to do their part.  But with so many recent mixed messages coming from U.S. officials, they are left wondering if the Obama Administration will do theirs.
