Blog Posts in I Am Congo
As documented in a new report from the Enough Project, which ranks electronics firms on their progress in cleaning up their supply chains of conflict minerals, there are glimmers of hope for eastern Congo despite ongoing violence there, which is driven partly by conflict minerals. When we visited Congo late last year, we met activist Amani Matabaro when we first arrived in Bukavu, South Kivu province. His story, his work, and his passion were featured as part of Raise Hope for Congo's video series "I Am Congo."
This op-ed, authored by Congolese advocate and artist Omékongo Dibinga, originally appeared in GlobalPost. Amid the chaos and ongoing conflict in eastern Congo, Dibinga focuses on the resilience of the Congolese people and their use of art not only as a tool of expression but also of resistance. The piece features the "I Am Congo" video profile of Congolese artist Petna Ndaliko.
Tomorrow, May 31, marks Margot Wallström's last day serving as the U.N.'s Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, a position she has held since April 2010. Wallström has been a prominent figure in the fight against sexual violence in areas throughout the world, including Congo. She authored this op-ed, originally featured in the Huffington Post, which highlights the “I Am Congo” video profile of Congolese human rights lawyer Denise Siwatula.
On May 1, the Raise Hope for Congo campaign launched “I Am Congo,” a new video series highlighting voices from the ground. The series profiles five inspiring Congolese individuals—Fidel Bafilemba, Amani Matabaro, Denise Siwatula, Petna Ndaliko, and Dominique Bikaba—who are making a difference in their communities. Enough Said will be highlighting each video profile over the coming weeks.
